Abstract
Preserved erythrocytes undergo several changes during storage, collectively referred
to as the storage lesion, which reduce the effectiveness of stored erythrocytes following
transfusion. This review describes the mechanisms leading to these changes, so far
as they are known, and discusses the relationship of the changes to one another and
how they contribute to the diminished function of stored erythrocytes.
